Most of us tend to overeat at times and it’s not uncommon - we feel as if we have eaten way more than our body can handle and wonder why we didn’t stop? On numerous occasions we find ourselves eating lots of food on a daily bases (it becomes routine; a pattern for demise) making us feel overly full – if you can relate to this then you are probably ‘Binge Eating’.
Signs of binge eating are:
- Feeling that your eating habits are not controllable.
- Eating for the sake of eating.
- Consuming above average proportions (do you have 2 dinners instead of one?)
- Eating even when you are not hungry; because food is there or just for comfort.
- You may find yourself hiding food so know one else can get it.
- Overeating to the point where you feel uncomfortable and/or sick.
- Feeling depressed/guilty at the amount you ate.
- Feeling embarrassed about the high amount you eat.
Binge eating is a common condition in today’s fast paced world (this triggers our primal instinct to ‘stock up’ as we may have to go without food on our next journey) and is generally caused by several factors to which your emotions play a big role. If you you feel you may be binge eating or heading towards doing so, here are some suggestions to avoid the condition:
- Eat Regularly – You should have 5-6 small meals a day - If that’d to difficult; stick to a hearty breakfast (porridge/oats should keep you full till lunch) a medium lunch (plenty of protein to keep you going) and a small dinner – not eating after 7pm at night will also help reduce the amount of fat your body stores when you sleep.
- Try not to skip any meals; this will cause you to feel hungry which, in turn will result in you consuming more and at the wrong time. Skipping meals also causes your metabolism to slow down meaning that you will end up putting on more weight from the food you eat.
- If you feel like eating during the day make sure you have things that are healthy for you such as apples, carrots, yoghurt and peanuts.
- Distract yourself - as soon as you feel like eating even if your not hungry make sure to find something else to do whether it is cleaning, gardening, going for a walk or doing craft work – do some exercise; increasing your heart rate will decrease your hunger. As long as you keep yourself busy eating will go to the back of your mind.
- Drink 8 glasses (around 2 litres) of water a day - Lots of people dont like water and lots of people cannot be bothered but drinking 8 glasses of water a day is not only great for you but it keeps you fuller for longer and staves off the hunger feeling.
Binge eating is not hard to stop; all you need to do is be more conscious of what your eating and when, exercise, be accountable for your actions and more importantly live a healthy lifestyle – with that everything comes in line.
